FTM 134: Import technical fastener resources

FTM 134, essential resources for fastener professionals

Important fastener technical resources that every fastener professional should have

This edition of the Fastener Training Minute with Carmen Vertullo was originally published November 17, 2018 as “Import technical fastener resources” during episode 134 of Fully Threaded Radio.

Today, we’re going to talk about some of the most important fastener technical Resources that every fastener professional should have. Some of them aren’t exactly brand new but they’re new and improved.

I’m going to go through them relatively quickly and you’ll be able to contact me later. If you’d like some more details on any of them. The first one of course is the famous Industrial Fasteners Institute IFI standards book. This has been around for a long time and there are lots of different versions. The latest version was the 9th Edition. Now, we have the 10th edition. It’s actually called the 2018 Edition and it has all the standards in it that the previous version had, two very thick books. However, as we know, any time a book is printed that has standards in it those standards can change and those books can become obsolete.

So what the IFI has done is they have compiled all of the standards that are in that book into an online subscription service. Now the cool thing about that online subscription service is that when you open those standards you get the actual consensus standards organization version of it. So if it’s an ASTM standard, you’re going to get the real ASTM standard not the IFI version of it. This is very well done, by the way. I love the way they do the copy in the IFI inch standards book. It’s nice large print is easy to read for my old eyes, but it’s nice to have the original that is complete. So I really encourage you to look at the IFI Online Standards Edition. So those are two resources that are brand new.

The 2018 edition of the Inch Standards Handbook and also the IFI online version of that book is another resource that is brand new and we’ve been waiting for a long time for this, along with the ISO Fastener Standards version of the same thing. Now the Technical Director Engineering at the IFI, Salim Brahimi, has been working on this for a long time. He was trying to bring the compilation of ISO Fastener Standards to us through the IFI, but couldn’t quite get the ISO to cooperate. He did manage, however, to get us access to it through the Standards Council of Canada. So that is another resource that is online. You buy a subscription to it, so you’re always current. It has hundreds of the most important Metric fastener standards that you would need in the ISO standard. So that’s one that everyone should have.

Finally the fourth one is of course the Industrial Fasteners Institute’s Fastener Technology Connection. That is a really wonderful online service that allows you to get all kinds of technical information about fasteners, including things like pork tension and Shear values and material Crossovers and a lots of technical bulletins. So those are four things every faster professional should have.

Let me run them by you quickly once again. The brand new 2018 version of the Industrial Fasteners Institute Inch Standards Handbook and the online version of that handbook, which is a subscription service. The online version of the ISO Fastener Standards from the Standards Council of Canada. And of course the IFI Technology Connection.

If you want any information about how to use those things or get your hands on them, you can email me or get hold of me by phone. I’m very happy to guide you through it go online and train you on how to use these resources.
